When East Meets West in the World of Education

A variety of different teaching methods exist around the globe, from differentiation to the use of technology in the classroom. Various strategies have arisen to keep up with our ever-changing world, which is always evolving and growing. Over time, interactive boards and pointers have replaced traditional chalk and classroom layouts have become much more friendly and inviting. Students learn differently than they did long ago, so schools and teachers have adapted their methods to best fit their pupils’ learning styles. But what is the best way for children to learn? At Inspiration Learning Center, we believe in bringing together two very different styles to maximize your child’s potential!

An educational study which sent seventy teachers from the United Kingdom to learn more about Chinese teaching strategies was conducted in order to understand the secrets behind Chinese students’ success. It’s a well-known fact that Chinese students work extremely hard and put a lot of effort into whatever they do. This is because it is ingrained in their culture to do so. Students have adopted what is known as the Confucian learning tradition what states that the main purpose of life is to learn and that it is a life-long journey. This is what we try to encourage at our learning center, as we try our best to make our students feel empowered with knowledge. Also, we stress the importance of practicing the information learned in class in the form of homework and revision, to further grasp newly learned concepts. Encouraging this sense of effort and consistent practice is something we strongly believe in.

Western teaching methods vary greatly from those in the East. In the West, classrooms are more student-centred and children learn actively. For instance, inquiry-based instruction is quite a popular method which enhances a student’s sense of curiosity. With this strategy, children come up with their own questions regarding the lesson and try to find the answers themselves. This teaches them to be inquisitive learners, always eager to learn more. Students are also encouraged to be creative thinkers under the Western teaching philosophy. Several school assignments and essays push students’ creativity, asking them to critically analyze a form of media, for example, or come up with their own research questions regarding a specific topic. In addition, classrooms are often differentiated in order to cater to all students’ learning styles. Students can choose the type of work that would best fit their style, whether it be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. With this method, students learn in a way that best fits their abilities.

Because both Eastern and Western teaching philosophies have such strong features, we decided to combine the best of both worlds at Inspiration Learning Center! At our learning facility, students will acquire new information with the freedom and creativity associated with the West and learn the power of hard work and consistent effort connected with the East.
